According to the World Biomass Association's (WBA) Global Bioenergy Statistical Report 2023, biomass will account for 96% of global renewable heat production by 2020. This is a valuable flagship report that provides insight into the complex dynamics of the global bioenergy landscape.
The recent 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, was an important milestone in global efforts to combat climate change.
The final agreement on the "transition from fossil fuels" and the firm commitment to "tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030" mark the beginning of a wonderful era for the sustainable energy transition.
Following these decisive results, the WBA's annual Global Bioenergy Statistics Report 2023 (10th edition) serves as a tool to guide stakeholders in making informed decisions.
Fossil fuels and renewables: Fossil fuels continue to dominate global energy supply, accounting for 80% of total primary energy supply. However, the share of renewable energy technologies in 2021 is 15%.
Power industry dynamics: Coal and natural gas play a leading role in global power generation, accounting for nearly 60% of total generation by 2020.
Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind have also made significant progress, accounting for 29% of global electricity generation.
Bioenergy accounts for 9% of the power mix, generating 685TWh. Of this, 69% came from solid biomass resources and 17% from municipal and industrial waste.
Renewable heat production: Over the past two decades, the contribution of renewable energy sources such as biomass, geothermal and solar thermal to global heat production has doubled.
By 2020, biomass will account for 96% of global renewable heat production, with Europe accounting for 88% of global bioheat production. Challenges for the transportation sector: The transportation sector remains heavily dependent on crude oil and its derivatives, which account for more than 90% of its energy consumption. An urgent focus on the use of renewable energy, including renewable electricity and fuels, is necessary to decarbonize the sector.
Bioenergy commodities: Europe leads in wood pellet production with 26 million tonnes of global production by 2022, while Africa leads in wood fuel and charcoal production with 720 million cubic metres and 36 million tonnes, respectively.
By 2020, liquid biofuels and biogas production will reach 146 billion liters and 38 billion cubic meters, respectively.
